8th Sheppey at Winter Camp 2006

Three Scouts and two Leaders from 8th Sheppey went to winter camp at Gilwell this year.

We missed the deadline to register for places but managed to get places by talking to 31st Gravesend Scout group (thanks David) who we camped with and 1st Farndon Scout group (thanks Owen), as all registered groups were able to add 3 extra people on the day

The list of activities available was very long and the  Scout had fun trying to get round all of them in the time we had,

The list included

Archery Shooting climbing (4 walls)
Inflatable quasar Robogeddon (robot wars) Simulator
Orienteering Pioneering Pedal Karts
High Ropes Challenge valley (assault course) Laser Clay Shooting
Cinema Outdoor Quasar Soccer Six (football coaching)
Quad bikes Zorbing Caving
Dodgems Lassourel (fairground ride) Disco (evenings)
Prussiking Abseiling Giant Games
Crafts Amateur radio Radio Fox Hunting

As you will see from the photos below it was fun, all the Scouts managed to withstand the cold and snow, some better than others, but all asked if we could do it again next year, see Dennis's report below to see how much fun everyone had

Dennis's report from Gillwell park Winter Camp 2006.

I was very excited, I had been for ages. The camp sounded fantastic, it had loads of activities. It was hard to believe there was all those activities in one camp.

In the car I found out we were teamed up with 31st Gravesend. After teasing Andrea all through the journey we finally got there.. We unloaded the trailer with the guys from 31st Gravesend. It was hard work, but we did it eventually. Once we had got the camp sorted, Peter started to heat up the macaroni cheese, (note to self, do not let Peter re-heat macaroni cheese. The pot still has an inch thick of burnt cheese at the bottom!).

In the morning (Saturday), Peter had made us a nice Fry-up, (I had veggie options of course). Scout leaders, other scouts, cub and beaver leaders came at about 9am, (all of Peter and Andrea's scout link friends).

I went off with one of the scouts from scout link. We went to the fair.

They had three rides from the fair that you could go on for free, the dodgems, a simulator and a spin around thingy. We waited in the queue for the spin around thingy but the other scout chickened out, so, we went on the simulator. After that I went around by myself for the rest of the day.On Sunday I went on the rifles and I hit the black bit. I was with the rest of the group for archery, which was very good. I went on the quad bikes on my own and I did about 20 laps in 5 minutes. Quazer Lazer was great but my team lost! I went on the lazer clay pigeon with Peter. I didn't get anything, but neither did Peter, and I supose if a grown man can't get anything you can't expect a 13 year old to! I also did the obstacle course with Dawn, but she won!!!

It was a great camp. So to all you fellow scouts don't be scared of the cold, and if you are just get yourself to a camping shop and buy a good 3 to 4 season sleeping bag and go to bed in a thick track suit!

our camp on thursday, before everyone arrived   Our Camp on Thursday, before everyone arrive.

we went up to Gilwell on Thursday to get a good pitch and save time Friday night

Note :- there is grass there, not mud

We arrived about 6PM Friday night, the Scouts unpacked the trailer and sorted out their kit into their tents then all headed off to the disco which went on until midnight.

Over the weekend as we had booked in with other groups and a number of people who we knew from scoutlink were camping, our site came to be a meeting point, we met , Roger-UK, Theodwyn (a Malaysian rover), Leon (Owen), Emily, Matt1sttot, tractor, Lizzie and many others from ScoutLink

What the Scouts woke up to saturday morning   This is what the Scouts woke up to on Saturday morning, a light covering of snow.

A few managed to get a few handfuls of snow and throw a few snowballs

The Lassorel fairground ride, few who rode it came off a bit green   This is the Lassourel fairground ride, some who rode it came off feeling a bit unwell, but as with all rides some rejoined the queue for another go

the old favourite the dodgems   The old favorite the dodgems, not a lot to say about this one, apart from not much of a queue for this most of the time

Leader in a tea cosy on challenge valley assault course   Dodgy looking leader in a tea cozy making challenge valley assault course look hard!!

A number of Scouts overtook him while he was on the way round

The mobile climbing wall   This is one of the mobile climbing walls (they had 2 mobile and the main one in the background)

these had a steady stream of Scouts and waiting times of only 5-10 minutes, but as the weekend progressed they got more difficult to climb due to the mud on the grips

Mick Aston with our group   The robot wars arena, good fun and played by 4 teams at a time ,

The down side was it was very noisy and situated not far from our camp, so we soon got fed up with the music and wanted to pull the plug on it, the  Scout enjoyed it

Radio Fox hunting   This was the radio fox hunting,

Teams had to use a radio receiver with a directional Ariel to find a number of transmitters hidden around the camp site

The simulator, very popular and waiting time up to an hour   The simulator, a very popular ride with waiting times up to an hour,

They apparently changed the program several times so if you had more than one go you did not always get the same ride

Sneaky!!

Socer 6, football training and skills   Soccer 6 football coaching and skills training

High ropes course, none of ours were mad enough to try it!!   This is the High Ropes course at Gilwell,

The only thing was that they did not tell people in the info pack was that if the weather was bad they would need clean / dry trainers to climb for safety reasons

but they still got a few insane people to climb and a few even did the "leap of faith"

someone climbing one of the poles   someone climbing the pole to their fellow Scout,

both at the top   Both at the top, now the fun begins as they were told things like, balance of one foot, lean back etc until they fell off the platform and were then lowered back down to solid ground.

This group only had two people on the platform, we did see 4 on there at one time, the last person had a job to get onto it

some of the outdoor quaser guns   some of the outdoor quasar guns, all the Scouts who played said it was good fun

Laser Clay Shooting   This was the laser Clay shooting, good fun and not to long to wait, the only thing was it was over very quick, each round was only 5 clays

MUD, MUD, Glorious MUD   Would you believe there WAS grass here 24 hours earlier.

This is what most of the site looked like by the time we left.

You would be amazed at some of the places mud got

this is what happens if you go on the mud slide!!!!   This is the condition some Scouts got in on the mud slide,

Some even made Mud Angels  instead of Snow angels

The end of a cold but fun weekend!!   The end of a cold, wet and muddy camp.

But we all had fun and everyone is looking forward to next years winter camp

We got the places at winter camp due to Scoutlink, where we chat to other leaders around the UK and even worldwide.

All groups who registered were allowed to add 3 extra people when they booked in on the Friday night.

We had planned to go jointly with 31st Gravesend and so asked it we could use there spare places, that left 2 more needed, after chatting to Leon from Chester I managed to secure the last 2 places, so we could all go.

This is the nature of Scouting, groups mixing and helping fellow Scouts when they need it,

The internet is making it easier for us to do this by making communication between groups a lot easier, not only within the UK but also worldwide.

We would probably not have been able to attend Winter camp unless we had been able to communicate with the other groups and arrange the places as we did

someone climbing one of the poles   Some of the Scouts from scoutlink and their friends chatting to ours.

Good to see the Scouts mixing and chatting with groups from all over the UK

Some of the scoutlink memebers round our campfire   Some of the Scoutlink members from around the country, round our campfire.

Wasn't there grass there at the start?
