Farewell to Buckmore Park Camp Almost all the Scouts and leaders from 8th Sheppey joined in the last ever camp at Buckmore park scout centre on 24th - 26th June 2005. The camp was a fun camp but the Saturday night campfire was a sad farewell to the site, there were more than a few damp eyes in the crowd during the event. The final flag down will be on Thursday 30th June, when scouts leave the site after being there for over 50 years. All the leaders who have helped look after and keep the site running in recent years were in a very sad and somber mood when we left Sunday afternoon, they have been offered a piece of land nearby which is 20 acres in size but it is apparently all but derelict and totally unsuitable. (full story at http://www.kentonline.co.uk/medway/news.asp?article_id=21086 ) Apart from that all of the scouts enjoyed a relaxed weekend under canvas which started with putting the tents up in the rain and while there were distant flashes of lightning and rumbles of thunder. A few parents were surprised we would not be inside due to the forecast weather but we said they are scouts and rough it in tents and they all thoroughly enjoyed themselves Thanks to Chris and Mark for making cricket stumps and bats, rounders bat and golf club from wood, much to the amusement of the scouts, who then had great fun playing with them and Jan and Mark for cooking in such a way as there were no complaints and little leftovers (how they managed that with some of our fussy eaters I don't know). One scout found out it is not a good idea to try and pull a prank on the leaders when he was sent to the office for a long weight (or should that be long wait), the staff at the office gathered what we were up to and gave him exactly that until we went to collect him about 20 minutes later, he is now trying to get revenge on me for that one.
