Scouting Needs You
How you can help There are about 30 vacancies in the Sheppey district for leaders and committee members, have a look below and see if you can help fill one of these. One important thing to point out first of all is that all positions in scouting are voluntary and unpaid, we do it because we enjoy it and find it rewarding but most of all those of us that have contact with the children have FUN, because we get to go camping, canoeing etc as well as the children. The children enjoy seeing the leaders get wet, missing the target in archery or shooting when they just got a bulls eye or us looking scared near the top of a thirty foot climbing wall when they have just climbed it and made it look simple. Also bear in mind the age ranges of the three sections in a group (beavers, cubs and scouts), if you are working with the children you may prefer working with younger or older children / young persons If you are interested in helping there are a number of ways, have a look at the options below and see if you have any skills or qualities which fit a particular role. Some roles need no skills just free time so there is something for everyone to do For instance if
The trick is to match a persons qualities and skills to a position which fits their lifestyle and free time so as to ensure effective use of the person and their skills We are based in Sheerness near Rose Street School, If you would like to help us then contact us via email, There are other groups on the island at Sheerness town centre, Halfway, Minster and Eastchurch if any of these location would suit you better then please contact us and we can put you in contact with the relevant group. Positions within a Group Committee member All groups have a committee to backup the work that the leaders do. There are a number of standard positions such as chairman, treasurer, secretary etc you find on all committees. In addition to these there are normally additional posts to do with fund raising etc. All committee members have to submit a CRB check and attend a single course so that they understand what the scout association stands for and is trying to achieve. The work of the committee is to free the leaders from the backroom tasks such as fund raising and general management so that they can devote all of their time towards helping the children / young persons achieve their full potential. The committee also run things like the tea and burger stalls at events, this enable them to see the results of their hard work in the background being turned into happy smiling faces having fun If you can help or want more information contact us via Email
We as leaders only know so much and on occasions need to bring in external people to teach certain skills or to build on areas we have taught basic skills to a higher level . If you have a particular skill relevant to a badge (e.g. photography including film development) you could assist the leaders by presenting the skill to the section over one or more weeks to complete the badge. You may also offer this skill to more than one group in your area, so that as many children / young persons may benefit from your knowledge as possible depending on your time and other commitments If you will be doing more than a one off or presenting your skills to more than one group then you will be asked to submit a CRB form If you can help or want more information contact us via Email Section Assistant This used to be called a parent helper. This is the lowest level of formal adult participation.
This ensures you have been background checked, understand the basic principles of child protection (the yellow card) and history and ethos of scouting. Once qualified you may then assist the section leader in running evenings and activities under their supervision, in doing this you then allow the section leaders to concentrate on safety or other things that they need to attend to. If you can help or want more information contact us via Email Assistant Section Leader / Section Leader (ASL/SL) This is what some people see as a natural progression from the section assistant, although some people go straight in at this level. The ASL / SL positions are appointed positions, in that you will need to submit a CRB check then appear before an appointments committee. This again is all part of the scout associations process of ensuring that all reasonable checks that can be made are made before leaders are allowed access to the children / young persons. Once you pass the appointments committee you will be given a temporary warrant for a short period of time, this gives you enough time to complete the basic training to the same level as a section assistant. Once you have completed this then you will be issued a longer warrant in which to complete your training. The training has changed in recent years to be more family friendly. It is now based on a modular system where you only have one weekend away (which is for the nights away / camping skills module). The rest of the training modules are either half or full days at weekends or some even run on weekday evenings. During 2005 versions of some of the modules will available via workbook or E-Learning on the internet so you will not be required to attend formal course and will have the ability to study at your own pace as and when your free time allows. Once you have completed a module(s) you then need to sit down with your training adviser to go over some of the material and validate the module, this ensures you have understood the content of the module to the required level. Once you have completed all of your training all that is left to say is WELCOME TO A VERY REWARDING AND ENJOYABLE WAY TO SPEND YOUR FREE TIME If you can help or want more information contact us via Email I have heard it said that the best leaders are the biggest kids at heart |
