8th Sheppey
Camp Wacky - Team Building Weekend

The kids took on the leaders and the jury is still out at to who won at Camp Wacky.

We had what could be described as an unconventional / relaxed camp, with lots of fun and games.

What only a few Scouts realised until we mentioned it was that almost all the games were of the co-operation / teambuilding variety (apart from the water fight Saturday afternoon).

The weather was a big concern over the weekend, as all week we had been watching the met office website and BBC weather page and both seemed to indicate that there were going to be thunderstorms and bad weather until late into the weekend, as the weekend got nearer the forecasts got better and in the end we only had heavy rain for a few hours Saturday morning.

Below are some photos and information on what we did and the fun we all had!!!

The Scouts were warned at the start not to believe anything the read or hear (except the rules) and if they broke the rules they would be sent home, no exceptions

All the scouts were then told there was no APL's, PL's or SPL for the weekend and only the leaders were in charge, and each leader was assigned a group for the weekend,

The reason for that was to take any pressure off the PL's etc so they could concentrate on the games (tasks), but in the end several of the PL's etc naturally took the lead within the groups in such a way as the rest did not realise but as there was no scouts with formal rank I hope they realised they were doing it in a different manner (suggestion rather than direct orders) and this can be carried on after the summer break

now to the fun

Friday night

before the scouts, (including the leaders children who were cubs and beavers) arrived the leaders put up the tents and organised who was sleeping where.

when the Scouts etc arrived we got them to put their swimming gear in a pile on one side of the hall and then girls bags in one corner and boys in another.

It was then time for flag break and camp photo while they were still clean and uniform neat and tidy

We then announced the first task was a hike to Queenborough (about 3 miles)

We took then a longer and very obscure route to the canal bank , they asked several times if we were going swimming, but it was pointed out their swimming gear had been left at the hut, we then walked to the local holiday park where one of the leaders  work and as we got to the gate we checked we had permission to take the scouts through and out the other side (which of course was a setup). it was not until a couple spotted their bags being walked from a car that some realised we were going swimming and finally as we walked past the pool we said right in the pool, much to the delight of the scouts.

water volley ball on camp wacky   Water volleyball on camp, this was the first team game, with some encouragement from the leaders (team captains ) we got them to pass the ball around and work as a team.

we then walked back to the hut and had jacket potatoes and fillings.

After that we had a general knowledge quiz and then play pictionary until the scouts decided time to bed, the last ones finally dropped at 1am.

SATURDAY

we were amazed some scouts up just after 6am (WOW)

just after 8am we had a cereals and cooked breakfast, then the fun began

we had 3 challenge bases set up, one for each of the teams, then a swap round after about 20 minutes done is such a way as they did not know any of the challenges / tasks ahead of them

we had a :-

  1. build a paper tower. the scouts were given a single newspaper and a roll of tape and had to build a tower or other object as tall as possible in the 20 minutes, the only rules were they could only use the objects given (paper and tape) and it had to be free standing, we did have one very good tower but just at time up a team member knocked it down with no time to rebuild
  2.  Pulley Game. there was a hook on the end of 4 ropes which were passed through eyes in the rafters, by working as a team and moving the hook they had to move a small kettle onto numbered pieces of paper. the rules were simple , kettle must be fully on the piece of paper, kettle was not to touch the ground other than on the paper, a dice was rolled to select the next number at random and if the same number rolled twice move to the home paper. this proved to be simple but infuriating and very popular with the kids
  3. Hoopla. the old favorite, get the rope coits over the wooden pegs and the scouts found it was not as simple as it looked

on the final run of each challenge / task it started to rain so as they all knew the tasks we moved indoors and finished them off.

we then gave them a bit of free time to play while we got lunch arranged

lunch time, turkey strips, chips and beans or spaghetti

afternoon, fun time

we had set the afternoon to be water based so the scouts could cool off if the weather was hot, it was not that hot, but our normal camp joker (Dennis ) was on form as normal, we put him I a canoe on the grass and gave him a little story

Dennis goes for a paddle

(or should that be puddle)

Dennis in his caneo, he forgot the water but will soon get it!!   Dennis in his canoe, he forgot the water but will soon get it!!

the story begins he is paddling his canoe in hot weather

it so hot, he needs a cool damp towel   the weather got hotter and he needed a damp towel to cool himself off

the weather changed to a light rain (from a range of water pistols)   The weather change VERY suddenly, to a light rain, this was of course provided by the scouts with the aid of water pistols (he was starting to get a bit damp)

the weather got worse and more rain (water from plastic cups )   The weather got even worse, it rained even harder (and Dennis got wetter) as the scouts poured water from plastic cups over him as well as the water pistols

starting to become a storm, and yet more water (wet sponges)   The weather turned into a storm and the rain came down in big wet sponges (not cats and dogs), oh dear he looks really soggy now

really bad weather, the rain is coming by the bowl full (poor dennis)   The storm got extremely bad, the water was coming from all directions from water pistols cups, sponges and now the bowl full

one very soggy scout   He is now soaked, but we can't leave the story there with the hero soaking wet, there is one last page

drying off in the WIND (provided by the scouts after eating to many beans!!!!)   The sun came out and to help the poor sailor dry off the wind blew (provided by the scouts after to many beans for breakfast !!!)

THE END

After that we let them have a chance to get their own back on the leaders with all the leaders taking a turn in goal for beat the goalie with wet sponges

beat the goalie, don't think he did to well   Mark in goal, look like he got wet and let a few through

Andrew in goal, a better performance   Andrew in goal, a better performance and also not as wet, the scouts must have been kind to him

Peter in goal, totally soaked but I kept throwing the sponges back, no one said i was not allowed to   Peter in goal, he defended well by throwing them back to get the scouts back and got totally soak for it

they called me ELMER THE ELEPHANT I can't see any similarity can you ????

my knobbly knees look nothing like Elmer's

After that we then had leaders against scouts in wet sponge volley ball (or volley sponge), we all got soaked and had to dry off and get changed ready for campfire

the scouts after a late night the night before all decided on an early night and were all in their tents by 11pm and the leaders not long after.

SUNDAY

cereals and fried breakfast again, then the balloon games started,

Burst the balloon with a cocktail stick, while blindfolded   Pop the balloon with a cocktail stick while blind folded,

The blindfolded person had another person to direct them and the only way to succeed is to work as a team

this was very popular with the children and they got their own back with a specially hard course for the leaders

Naughty scouts, putting marks ballons on the pulley game so they could keep moving it when he got near (good fun though)   Naughty scouts, putting Marks balloons on the pulley game so they could keep moving it when he got near (good fun though)

The ski game with a variation, the only thing is as this pair are finding out the long balloons don't burst if you go across them (particalarly if the leaders have been devious and not blown them up fully)

lunch was a full roast dinner,

after lunch was tidy up and get ready for Flag down.
